As a young child, I traveled with my family to Chicago, Seattle, and other large cities. I saw numerous people without a home, often looking downward holding cardboard signs to ask for help. I tugged on my parent’s sleeves. “We must do something! We can’t pretend we don’t see. We can't just do nothing.” They’d give me something small to give; and even though it made me feel a little better inside, I knew deep down it would only go so far. People need ongoing access to resources and ways to get what they need—and deep inside they need to feel seen and know they matter.
At school, service projects were encouraged. Class outings, club projects, and acquiring service hours emphasized how small steps can make a big impact. It didn’t take long to think of ways that we students could take initiative on our own to make a difference in our community and have fun doing it. Together. Regularly. New Way Necessities was born.
In 2022 I founded New Way Necessities, Inc. Creating a student-run organization that helps people in need in a tangible way had been a dream of mine for a long time.
